More information about Old Bavarian dark Altbairisch Dunkel from the Ayinger private brewery is a bottom-fermented beer specialty brewed with five different malts. Two of these malts are dark malts that are kilned in the traditional old Bavarian way. This process gives the malt its characteristic taste and makes the beer a specialty. The beer is also brewed using the so-called two-mash process. In this traditional Bavarian technique, the mash is boiled in two phases. The result of this elaborate process is a dark export beer with an alcohol content of 5.0% and a whole range of malty flavors. The Altbairisch Dunkel flows into the glass in the dark brown color of hazelnuts and shows great, copper-red reflections when exposed to light. A fine-pored, long-lasting head crowns the beer and exudes an intense malt aroma. Oven-fresh bread meets roasted grain, soft caramel, creamy blossom honey and a hint of melt-in-the-mouth chocolate on the nose. The first sip is strongly malty and tastes of creamy toffee, subtly bitter roasted malt, roasted nuts and freshly brewed coffee. The hops remain discreetly in the background and at best provide an airy, slightly grassy, citrusy freshness. A delicate hint of dried fruit elegantly rounds off the aroma. The finish comes up trumps with fine notes of cocoa bean and mocha and crowns this round, smooth beer. Fans of malt-intensive beers will love Altbairisch Dunkel!
